PEKANBARU - Muhammadiyah University of Riau (Umri) and Lancang Kuning University (Unilak) have eco-riparian parks dedicated to them by Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK) Siti Nurbaya Bakar.
In the middle of Pekanbaru, Riau, the Minister of Environment and Forestry determined that Pertamina Hulu Rokan's (PHR) ecotourism might serve as a center for education and a solution to environmental issues.
On Monday, September 30, 2024, the Muhammadiyah University of Riau in Pekanbaru hosted the launch of Ecoriparian. At the same time, the Ecoriparian University of Lancang Kuning had its virtual launch.
The government, corporate sector, and academic institutions have shown their strong commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development with the opening of the two eco-districts.
"This is very good, because it relates directly to the people. Its social relevance is very high, it can provide solutions to environmental problems and provide educational, social and economic functions for the community," said Siti Nurbaya at the inauguration of the two eco-divisions.
Both Lancang Kuning University and Ecoriparian Muhammadiyah University of Riau are green spaces that serve social, cultural, commercial, and educational purposes.
It is envisaged that ecotourism would help the nearby community, enhance the quality of the campus environment, and establish the campus as a hub for education on the management of water resources and ecosystems.
In this ecoregion there is a constructed wetland or artificial swamp which was created and designed specifically for treating polluted water by utilizing integrated natural processes.
Wastewater from residential areas will undergo decontamination through natural processes involving swamp or riparian vegetation before being released into water bodies.
From an economic standpoint, Ecoriparian Universitas Muhammadiyah Riau also has cafés and locations for Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Eco-Friendly Biodigester-Based Enterprises (MSMEs).
An approach to cut waste is to use a biodigester, which turns trash into biogas. In eco-riparian settings, the gas generated is used to light stoves in cafés and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise outlets.
Meanwhile, the Lancang Kuning University Ecoriparian is located in an area of approximately five hectares in the Lancang Kuning University campus area, Rumbai District, Pekanbaru. Consists of three zones, namely core, buffer and development.
The core zone consists of a lake whose function has been optimized as a retention pond using a lake ecosystem approach. The buffer zone is an optimization of lake borders as green open space (RT) and blue open space corridors (RTB) using constructed wetlands and detention ponds. Meanwhile, the development zone is the optimization of open space as a space for social interaction.
Additionally, there's the Biodiversity Park (Kehati) environment, which incorporates a natural idea by using natural stone for the jogging track route and an amphitheater that serves as a performance space for both locals and students. Additionally, a café serves as a venue for the growth of student businesses.
Existing facilities including walkways, bridges, tree barcodes for plant identification, gates, shelters, seating areas, landscaping, electricity, and multipurpose gathering spaces have all been renovated in Lancang Kuning University's Biodiversity Arboretum Forest, educative information boards on the many kinds of plants and animals that may be found there.
PHR is committed to protecting the environment and conserving biodiversity in line with various government programs, especially at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
Ecoriparian Muhammadiyah University of Riau and Lancang Kuning University are one of Pertamina Hulu Rokan's social and environmental responsibility programs, environmental pillars.
In an attempt to decrease pollution in water flows, riparian development also complies with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry's mission (rivers).
It is envisaged that the idea of creating an integrated waste water treatment plant (IPAL) and green open space would not only filter waste water but also provide the local population with a location for education and ecotourism.
In this case, Pertamina Hulu Rokan is carrying out the collaboration of Pentahelix with the Directorate General of Pollution and Environmental Damage Control of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (PPKL-KLHK) and the world of education in an effort to protect the environment.
This eco-riparian facility is a concrete step for Pertamina Hulu Rokan in maintaining environmental sustainability and providing benefits to the surrounding community.
Pertamina Hulu Rokan would like to express its gratitude for the attention and support provided by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in providing directions regarding environmental management and protection in the Rokan Working Area (WK).
"By handing over eco-division to Muhammadiyah University of Riau and Lancang Kuning University, hopefully it can be managed well independently so that the benefits can be felt by the people of Riau," added Pertamina Hulu Main Director Rokan Ruby Mulyawan.
The Chancellor of Lancang Kuning University, Prof Dr Junaidi SS MHum, expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and Pertamina Hulu Rokan for their support for eco-riparian development in the campus area.
"Thanks to the support of Pertamina Hulu Rokan and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, through eco-district development, Lancang Kuning University has become a role model for green campus management in Riau and has raised Lancang Kuning University's position in the GreenMetric University ranking," said Junaidi.
When it comes to protecting the environment and building a sustainable future, Lancang Kuning University can serve as a hub for knowledge and an inspiration to other academic institutions in the future. (realease)
