Metro Riau Group Supports Work Safety Through the Launch of the Book Occupational Safety and Health (K3) by Dr Julnaidi
PEKANBARU – Metro Riau Group hosted a book launch and review event titled 'Occupational Safety and Health (K3) on Palm Oil Plantations' as part of a series of commemorations celebrating the company's anniversary. Dr Ir Julnaidi, ST, MT, wrote this book on Thursday afternoon, January 16, 2025, at the Pangeran Hotel in Pekanbaru.
Many people attended the ceremony, including Boby Rachmat, the Head of the Riau Manpower and Transmigration Service, and executives from Riau's palm oil firms. Their presence demonstrates the significance of occupational safety and health concerns in Riau's palm oil plantation industry, which is one of the country's most important industries.
Apart from that, in the book review session, this event presented discussants from various backgrounds, namely Prof. Edi Erwan, Academician and Deputy Chancellor III of the Sultan Syarif Kasim State Islamic University of Riau. Also Lichwan Hartono, Chairman of the Riau Indonesian Palm Oil Entrepreneurs Association.
As well as Dr. Gulat ME Manurung, General Chair of the Central Leadership Council of APKASINDO (Indonesian Palm Oil Farmers Association). Also Dr (Can) Ir Fakhrunnas MA Jabbar, Riau Cultural Expert and Dr Reny Mulyani, Admission Specialist at Awal Bros Hospital.
The discussants presented insights from a variety of fields, including academics, business, culture, and health, adding weight to the debate over the deployment of K3 in oil palm farms.
In his remarks, Metro Riau's General chairman, H Maskur, stressed the organization's commitment as a media partner to improving occupational safety and health standards in the palm oil industry.
“This book is a real contribution in building awareness and deeper understanding of the importance of K3, especially in the oil palm plantation sector which is the backbone of the regional economy,” he said.
Moreover, he continued, palm oil is the biggest commodity in Riau, apart from the oil and gas and forestry industries.
“That's why we really support efforts to improve K3 in this sector. Whatever ideas and efforts to advance the three main industrial sectors in Riau, Metro Riau is ready to support,” he said.
Dr Julnaidi, the author of the book, said that his work was born out of his concern about the high number of work accidents on oil palm plantations in Riau.
“This book started from my concern when I saw the number of work accidents on oil palm plantations. Considering that Riau has the largest oil palm plantations in Indonesia, it is fitting that the K3 aspect should be a top priority,” said Julnaidi.
He also emphasized the palm oil industry's significant potential for job creation and economic development in the neighborhood. “Apart from economic benefits, palm oil has a variety of derivative products, such as cosmetics, soap, and renewable energy,” the professor said.
In the process of writing his book, Julnaidi also discussed environmental issues that are often associated with the palm oil industry. “I have debunked the issue that palm oil is not environmentally friendly through research and international journals published in England. This book also examines the myths and facts about palm oil,” he explained.
He highlighted the need of prioritizing workplace safety in this industry, given the large number of documented incidents. Aside from that, he thinks that this book will be a valuable resource in supporting improved K3 implementation in the field.
Meanwhile, Boby Rachmat, the Head of the Riau Manpower and Transmigration Service, expressed his support for the book's debut. According to him, this book is a strategic step toward establishing a safe and sustainable work culture on oil palm farms.
“As a crucial sector for the national economy, the palm oil industry has significant problems, particularly in terms of worker safety. As a result, the presence of this book is very significant,” he said.
This book, he continued, is not just a collection of theories or guidelines. But it is also a real step to build a safe, healthy and sustainable work culture in the palm oil plantation sector.
On the other hand, he stated that according to statistics from the Manpower Office, there would be more than 370,000 work accidents in Riau by 2023, with the plantation sector accounting for 60.5%, or around 224,000 incidents.
“That's why we really need to learn how to implement K3 well, so that we can minimize work accidents on oil palm plantations. And if this is neglected, this could be detrimental both morally and materially, especially in the employment sector,” he said.
Moreover, he added, K3 is currently a pillar in assessment. “That's why we hope that with this book, innovations regarding K3 will emerge for workers on
oil palm plantations,” he said.
Aside from that, Boby believes that Riau would become a national model for applying K3 in the palm oil plantation industry. “If the implementation of K3 is ignored, the impact will be very detrimental, both morally and materially,” he said.
Not only that, but he expects that the publication of this book would generate significant momentum in raising awareness of the relevance of K3 in the palm oil plantation industry. With the help of many parties, it is intended that the number of workplace accidents would be reduced, resulting in a safer and more productive work environment.
“This book is expected to trigger the emergence of new innovations in K3, so that the palm oil sector not only becomes a mainstay of the economy, but also a pioneer in work safety,” concluded Boby.
